Erika Kamimura

Since watching the Girls S-Cup 2011, I have "fallen" for shootboxing. Erika Kamimura is a beast. She reminds me of some of my favorite boxers like Roberto Duran and Joe Frazier. She's so intense and relatively unknown that I decided to put a little video together to help educate you people. Here it is

She recently lost to RENA in a very close fight but this girl is only going to get better and that is scary

V.V. Mei Yamaguchi vs. Mika Nagano

One of the more interesting fights on the upcoming JEWELS 17 card is that between V.V. Mei Yamaguchi and Mika Nagano. Both fighters are coming off of loses as V lost to Seo Hee Ham and Mika lost to Megumi Fujii. Let's take a look at my breakdown of the two fighters.

Name: Mei Yamaguchi
Age: 28
Height: 153cm/5'0
Weight: 53 kg/ 115
Record: 8-3-1 (4 wins by submission, all losses by decision) 5-3 Shoot Boxing

Important Facts:

1. Has beaten higher level competition than Mika, as she holds a submission win over Yuka Tsuji and Saori Ishioka.

2. 2/3 of V's losses are split decision losses in the horrible 2 round system.

3. V's experience in Shoot Boxing and her Karate background will give her a significant striking advantage over Mika.

Name: Mika Nagano
Age: 27
Height: 161/ 5'3
Weight: 52 kg/ 114
Record: 8-5 ( 6 wins by submission, 1 loss by submission)

1. Before her MMA career, Mika was a nationally ranked wrestler in Japan and she has relied heavily upon her wrestling skills in her MMA career.

2. All of her submission victories have come by way of armbar.

3. In their rematch she was able to escape Fujii's submission attempts and got her back at one point.

4. Has been improving her game and faced top competition.

Charlie's pick: V.V. Mei by Decision

As the fight is only 2 rounds (damn you), I don't think that V will have enough time to finish Mika but I do think that she will win the decision. In Mika's last fight, while she looked better on the ground than she has in the past, her lack of stand up skills was really revealed by Fujii who battered her with boxing combinations. V's Shoot Boxing/Karate experience will give her an edge on the feet and her solid Jiu Jitsu skills should allow her to defend against Mika's submission attempts and allow her to counter Mika's wrestling.

What does Mika have to do to win:

In order to win this fight Mika needs to employ and effective yet boring game plan. She needs to use her better wrestling ability to take V down and keep her on her back. As long as she grinds away in top control she should be able to walk away with the decision. Her armbar submissions have worked primarily against lower level competition and at this point in her career her opponents have to see it coming.

Here is a nice picture that the two took during a meeting. This should be a fun fight and I look forward to watching it live.

Charlies prediction record 0-1 ( How was I supposed to know the best RENA we have seen would show up lol)

JEWELS 17 on Dec 17th

On December 17th, there is going to be a JEWELS event at Shinjuku Face in Tokyo. For the conclusion of there bantamweight tournament, JEWELS has put on a pretty decent card.

The main event will be a rematch between Champion and Fujii protege Ayaka Hamasaki vs Seo Hee Ham and there is also an interesting match between V.V. Mei Yamaguchi and Mika Nagano on the card.

Through out the week, I am going to break down the matches on this card and offer my predictions as to who will win and how. Hopefully I will do better than I did in my last predictions.

I am glad to also announce that as I am going to the event, I will be sure to post pictures, results, and how I felt the event went.

First Rise Queen

It looks like my prediction was completely wrong! Reports state that RENA came into the fight in possibly the best shape of her fighting career. Perhaps the upset loss this year and the knockdown in the exhibition with Kamimura have re-motivated her.

The fight was a back and forth affair, with Kamimura trying to land her power left hook but the real success of the night was RENA's use of the front kick. She was able to use the front kick to keep Kamimura out of punching range and it also frustrated the younger Kamimura who got reckless with her strikes at times.

The official score was 48-46, 47-46, 46-45 for RENA after five rounds. It is worth noting that RENA was deducted 1 point for clinching while Kamimura was deducted 2 points for clinching going to show how close the affair actually was.

One can only hope that RENA remains motivated in the sport and continues to put on awesome fights like she did tonight. Also, let's hope that Kamimura learns from her loss and comes back even stronger than before. She is still young and I look forward to her future matches.

Congratulations to RENA on an excellent fight

If I can find the fight video or at least pictures I will add them to this post

RENA vs Erika Kamimura

On Wednesday night, a battle between the face of Shoot Boxing, RENA, and Erika Kamimura is set to take place. Both of the fighters are a lot younger than expected as RENA is 20 and Erika is 18. Don't let their ages fool you though as this will be the 47th match between the two. Let's take a look at the fighters and what they bring to the ring:

Name: RENA
Age: 20
Height: 160 cm/ 5'3
Weight: 50.15 kg/ 110.6 lb
Record: 16-5-1 (4 wins by TKO, all losses by decision)

Important Facts:
1. A majority of RENA's matches have been under Shoot Boxing rules and she trains at a Shoot Boxing gym.

2. RENA has never lost by KO/TKO even though she has faced strong punchers before such as Hisae Watanabe.

3. There have been rumors spreading that RENA has been contemplating retirement.

Name: Erika Kamimura
Age: 18
Height: 158cm/ 5'1
Weight: 47kg/ 103.6 lb
Record: 23-1 (12 wins by either KO/TKO - Lone loss by decision)

Important Facts:

1. Erika trains at a kickboxing gym and most of her matches are kickboxing matches.

2. Erika has power. I repeat, Erika has power. She has found a lot of success with her left hook. This power was evident when Erika knocked RENA down in an exhibition match they had this year.

Charlie's Prediction: Erika by TKO

I don't see how RENA can avoid the power and aggressiveness of Erika for five rounds. They will be using smaller gloves than they did in the exhibition which, will mean that the punches will be landing even harder..

I will be sure to post the results of the fight and will try to find some video as well.

Please check out this highlight made by @JMMA_ALLDAY

Sadly there is not much video of Erika's fights but here is a video
